Essential-oil candles, hand-poured in Cymru/Wales
IRUSU. means ‘pretending not to be home when someone knocks at your door.’
AKA it’s the permission (you don’t actually need, by the way) to close the door, ignore the noise and take some time for yourself.
We make scented candles using essential oils and sustainable soy wax. Every candle is hand-blended, poured and individually numbered in Cymru/Wales. Our candles are vegan, cruelty-free and packaged with care, without including half the planet.
The IRUSU. story
IRUSU. began in Stoke Newington, London, in 2019.
It grew from a love of fragrance, a care for the environment and a desire to contribute something back to our communities from monies made.
IRUSU. has since moved closer to family roots by the sea in Cymru/Wales. (Cymru am byth!) This is where we now blend essential oils, pour our sustainable soy wax and number each candle by hand.
The setting may have changed, but the idea has not. We make distinctive candles for the moments when you would rather not answer the door.
What goes into an IRUSU. candle?
Our fragrances are created with essential oils, blended into sustainable soy wax manufactured in the UK.
Our original collection moves through different moods and moments of the day:
EARTH: Patchouli, black pepper and basil
DAWN: Bergamot, grapefruit and orange
DUSK: Lavender, rosemary and eucalyptus
FFRES: Peppermint, camphor and lime
CLEAR: Sage, vetiver and coriander
Each candle is hand-poured and numbered, rather than sent down a production line. Our wicks contain cotton and paper, and the finished candles are vegan and cruelty-free.
The result is a collection of unusual, aromatic scents with plenty of personality.
Made with less waste in mind
We are a candle business, so making things inevitably uses materials. We would not pretend otherwise.
What we do try to do is make careful choices, reduce unnecessary packaging and give customers practical ways to reuse what they already have.
Recyclable packaging
Orders are wrapped minimally in cardboard boxes, tissue paper and tape. These materials are recyclable and, where possible, contain a high percentage of recycled material.
Full-size duo orders and larger purchases are individually wrapped and protected with biodegradable and compostable filler manufactured in Cymru/Wales.

Our environmental impact
IRUSU. joined Ecologi in January 2021 to support projects intended to reduce carbon emissions and fund tree planting.
As of August 2026, we had:
avoided 145.45 tonnes of c02e (carbon dioxide equivalent)
and planted 5000 trees

Independent by nature
IRUSU. remains an independent candle brand, supported by customers and brilliant independent retailers.
Our candles have been stocked by shops in Cymru/Wales and elsewhere in the UK, including retailers in: Abertawe/Swansea, Sir Gâr/Carmarthenshire, London and Leeds.
They have also appeared in: The Independent, The Guardian, The Sunday Times Style, the Evening Standard, Stylist, Elle and The Observer. DUSK was named an IndyBest Best Buy and included in The Guardian’s Christmas Gift Guide.
Lovely, obviously. But the thing that keeps IRUSU. going is every person who buys a candle, recommends a scent or returns to top up an empty jar. Diolch to you, our fragrant pals.
We can always do better
‘Ethical’ and ‘sustainable’ should not be treated as badges a business awards itself and then forgets about.
We are proud of the choices we have made, but we know there is more work to do. We will continue looking for ways to reduce waste, improve our materials, support worthwhile causes and be clearer about our impact.
